Circuits & Training Areas

What is a Circuit?

A circuit is a pattern within the airspace around an airport that pilots can use as a ‘practice loop’. This can include a series of take-off and landing procedures within a limited time, making it more efficient than flying from one airport to another.

Circuit training offers pilots the opportunity to conduct a range of manoeuvers while being exposed to different conditions during their practice flights. Both new and experienced pilots fly circuits to practice skills that are vital to general safety, including those who have recently performed maintenance or repair work on their aircraft. Whether a pilot is accumulating flight time as part of a training program or as a licensing requirement, practice hours are an important part of air safety for everyone. The students practicing their manoeuvers on small aircraft today will be the commercial pilots of tomorrow.

YPK provides the necessary facilities, however, the air traffic controllers ensure that the training is conducted safely and efficiently.

When can pilots fly?

YPK has night restrictions in place for our community. Circuit training is not authorized from 10pm-7am from runways 26L, 26R & 18/36 unless approved by airport management and are to avoid overflight of noise-sensitive areas, unless unable due to crosswind limitations, operational/safety considerations, or as directed by ATC.

Training Areas

Transport Canada regulates ‘training areas’ for pilots to use for flight training purposes. The Ridge Meadows communities are close to three of these locations. Any pilot, whether from YPK, ZBB, YNJ, YCW or even YXX & YVR are permitted to train here. So even though you may see a plane flying in this area, it may not be from YPK.

The red “clouds” in the image above represent the official ‘training areas’ that all airports are permitted to use for flight training.
